A couple of days ago I was listening to a playlist in Spotify called “Chris’ Playlist.” The playlist is a fun list of songs that Coldplay’s Chris Martin curated to share with the world.
In this playlist I listened to Jain a french artist with a multicultural background. The first song I heard was Makeba. A song dedicated to South African singer and civil activist Miriam Makeba.
What I really enjoyed about this song was the perfect mixture of electronic music with African rhythms accompanied with Jain’s vocals. Another thing to note is how Jain uses a great amount of sounds that add colors of the music.
I like her uses of different cultural rhythms and so far each of her songs has a different personality and distinguishable sounds. The only things they seem to have in common is her voice.
I do think her voice actually excels when she sings reggae but it works with the other more pop oriented songs.
Another song from the Zanaka album that became one of my favorites was Dynabeat. It’s an excellent pop tune that goes through different phases but it always brings it back to the happy walking with a smile type of sound. I love the airiness in the beginning and then the funky sounds really settle this song as a dance party must-listen.
One of her most recent work that I very much appreciate is the song Inspecta which takes melody from the inspector gadget show and movie with fun rap lyrics. It’s fast, it’s cool and I enjoy the change of pace.
If you want to hear a plethora and mixture ethnic rhythms make sure to check out her music.
